Core Description

Poster Printing FAQs: The information below answers Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about poster printing in the Chemistry Department:

The Chemistry Department has Canon iPF8400S 42 inch model: Max Resolution Up to 2400 x 1200 dpi. Media Sizes: Roll (42 in), Roll A0 (36 in), Roll A1 (24 in) The Chemistry Department only uses 42″ paper. We use HP Prem Instant-dry Gloss Photo Paper (Q7995A 42″). We also have a Banner Vinyl (cloth) available. The cloth can be folded and may be convenient for travel. HP Heavyweight Coated paper (C6569C 42″) is available as well. The largest poster rolls that we have are 42″ rolls. We cannot do 48 inch width posters. If you need one, you’ll have to do that elsewhere – Earth & Planetary Science Library has one. Talk to Marti or Cheryl at 314-935-5406. Most posters are printed using Powerpoint. We will print to a width of 42″ and a length that maintains the correct aspect ratio. For example, if a powerpoint slide is provided that has a page setup of 30″ x 40″, the final print would be 42″ x 56″. If you require a specific size poster (e.g., 36″ x 48″) you must notify us with the size restraints. Once we receive the file we will print a 11″ x 17″ proof of it. You should review the proof to make sure everything looks correct. Pay special attention to the symbols and images. Our PCs may not have the same fonts you used when you designed the poster on your system.

What are your hours of operation? 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays.

How Long Does Poster Printing Take? Poster printing typically takes about an 1/2 hour if there are no problems. However, unanticipated problems may result in much longer print times.

What other applications output can be printed as a poster? Other applications that we’ve successfully printed posters from are Adobe Acrobat (PDFs), Illustrator files and Canvas. Powerpoint seems to be the easiest for most people to use so far. If you use Illustrator or Canvas, please publish the file to pdf and submit it to us.

Can I use files created on an Apple? Yes. A Mac in McM 429 is available with most applications, including Keynote. A pdf of the poster designed on a Mac would be preferred and have given us the least amount of problems when printing from our PCs.

How should I transport my files? If the poster is small (< 8 Mb), you may email it to poster@wuchem.wustl.edu. Both Jason and I will receive the message. If you bring in your file on a USB thumb drive or CD – we should be able to read it. For large files, use Washington University’s dropbox service (dropbox.wustl.edu).

Do you have tubes for poster storage and transportation? No, we do not keep those on hand, but they can be purchased in the University’s bookstore.

How do I pay for poster printing? For payment, we send invoices to the PI on a monthly basis. We’ll need the PI’s contact info for our invoice (department #, campus box, phone #, email address).

How long will my poster’s colors last? Posters are printed using UV-resistant dye and those hanging in our halls have lasted several years without any noticeable loss of color.

Can I have my poster laminated? We do not have the ability to do that. Below is a list of copy service providers near the Danforth campus that provide lamination services. Even if you have to print a poster here and laminate it, it will still be a fraction of what printing a poster would be elsewhere – for example, the Hi/Tec copy center charges $144 to print a 36″ X 48″ poster.
Hi/Tec Copy Center 375 N. Big Bend Blvd. – St. Louis, MO 63130 – Phone: 314-863-4111 Fax: 314-863-4666 Laminating is $2 / sq. ft. for up to 36 inch size posters
Kinko’s Copies 314-725-8704  8805 Ladue Rd. St. Louis, MO Laminate up to 42″ size posters for $2 / square foot Commercial Document Solutions 314-421-5141 614 Olive St. St. Louis, MO $ 1 / sq. ft laminating
