Education in the ethical and responsible conduct of science and scholarship is fundamental to the very nature of conducting research that respects the public trust and contributes to the betterment of society.

As stated in the Washington University Code of Conduct:

Washington University is committed to the highest ethical and professional standards of conduct as an integral part of its mission, the promotion of learning. To achieve this goal, the University relies on each community member's ethical behavior, honesty,integrity, and good judgment.

The goal of PERCSS is to educate and inform the Washington University research community to conduct research that fulfills these important obligations.

General program description

Washington University provides education in ethics and responsible conduct in research via PERCSS, the Program for Ethical and Responsible Conduct in Science and Scholarship. Currently, PERCSS offers face-to-face ethics workshops and web-based learning modules.

Workshops are four hours in duration and are offered annually. Each begins with two lectures that provide introduction to common ethical issues and Washington University policies and guidelines related to research. The second half of the workshop is devoted to small group discussion lead by WUSTL senior faculty. Groups discuss hot topics and case studies related to responsible conduct of research.

PERCSS web-based learning modules are available in the following subject areas:

  • Data Ownership, Acquisition, Sharing, and Management
  • Mentor-Trainee Relationships
  • Peer Review
  • Research Integrity
