Animal Education in Learn@Work

Required Training

All required animal care and use training is assigned by completing the Compliance Profile, a series of questions about the activities of your job. Courses are assigned within 24 hours of completing the Compliance Profile. Assigned courses appear on your Me page or in the My Learning section of the Learn at Work homepage.

If your responsibilities have changed (e.g. working with new animal species, beginning to provide anesthesia, etc…) retake your Compliance Profile to ensure your required training is up to date.

What training do I need to complete?

Trainings are required once unless otherwise noted.

All Personnel Listed on an IACUC Protocol

• Introduction to Animal Care and Use

All Animal Users and Principal Investigators (PIs)

• Occupational Health – Medical Surveillance Questionnaire Required annually

Those Working with Biosafety Level (BSL) 2 or 3 Materials in animals

• Animal Biohazard Safety

Non-Animal Users Accessing Rodent Facilities

• Barrier Orientation for Facilities or Security Personnel

Species-Specific Trainings

Mouse/Rat Handlers

• Required training
  • All: Mice and Rats
  • Those administering anesthesia: Rodent Anesthesia and Surgery
  • Those needing access to rodent housing facilities: Barrier Orientation
• These supplemental trainings are not assigned by the compliance profile. Work with your PI to determine which course(s) to take.
  • In-person Courses:
    • Mouse Handling Wet Lab
    • Mouse Techniques Wet Lab (Mouse Handling or equivalent test out required before attending. Email DCM Training to set up a test out.)
    • Rat Techniques Wet Lab
    • Rodent Survival Surgery Aseptic Techniques Wet Lab
  • Learn@Work Modules:
    • Waste Anesthetic Gas (WAG) Safety Course (recommended for all isoflurane users)

Learn@Work Troubleshooting

If you experience issues with online courses not automatically being marked complete in Learn@Work, try the following:

• Click through to the very last slide of the course
• Ensure you have passed the quiz
• Once finished with the course, close the pop-up player window (not your browser window) to return to Learn@Work
• If the issue persists, contact the WUIT help desk at 314-935-5707
