U.S. Government funding agencies are continuing to raise concerns around the reporting of international activities, such as academic appointments, research relationships, and other support.
The Reporting International Relationships website outlines best practices for the reporting of these relationships to federal sponsors that I recommend you follow as this area continues to evolve. This site is also a centralized location for agency information and updates as well as recent events, and will be regularly updated with new information.
Several agencies are modifying their policies or developing guidance (e.g. NIH, DOD, NSF). Recently, the NIH issued its expectations for reporting other support, foreign components, and appointments (NOT-OD-19-114). We are expecting NIH to revise and clarify this guidance further.
As agencies issue and refine their requirements, I encourage you to follow the best practices outlined in this site. Should you have questions about an agency’s specific request or requirements to report a relationship or activity, please contact Jeneane Braden, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research Integrity and Ethics, and Joe Gindhart, Associate Vice Chancellor for Finance and Sponsored Projects. They are also available for department meetings to provide more information and answer questions.
Sincerely,
Jennifer K. Lodge, PhD
Vice Chancellor for Research
