National Institutes of Health (NIH) Data Management and Sharing Policy

Published February 10, 2023

The NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy went into effect for applications due beginning January 25, 2023.

Please visit the NIH FAQs for up-to-date information from NIH.

NIH provided sample Data Management and Sharing Plans (DMSPs)

These sample DMSPs are provided for educational purposes to assist applicants with developing Plans but are not intended to be used as templates and their use does not guarantee approval by NIH.

Some of these NIH sample plans contain language that will not be relevant to all sponsoring institutions.  For example, PIs at WashU are responsible for oversight of data management and sharing and complying with the approved DMSP. Therefore, Element 6 of the DMSP should describe how the PI, not WashU’s Office of Sponsored Research Services (OSRS), will monitor and manage the DMSP.

Any DMSPs that require updates or additional information should be updated prior to award at the Just-In-Time stage or after award via the RPPR submission.
