RMS Training Resources Now Available for Department Administrators

Published on March 15, 2018

It is time to prepare for the move from PDS to the new Research Management System (RMS)! The go-live date is set for April 23, 2018. Department Administrators are encouraged to access the training resources as soon as possible to gain early experience in RMS via the training environment.

Note: Current PDS users will have their security access grandfathered into the RMS production environment for the April go-live.

The following RMS training resources are now available:

User Guide

The RMS User Guide walks you through creating and tracking a proposal document. It includes screenshots, step-by-step guidance, and helpful tips for working in RMS. This will be an important reference tool as you learn about the system and create your own proposals. The User Guide provides a sequence of steps that are critical in developing an accurate budget.

This User Guide will continue to be updated throughout the transition to RMS and thereafter. Please continue to access the document using the link to ensure you are getting the most current version.

Online Training in Learn@Work

(pre-requisite for in-person trainings)

RMS online training in Learn@Work currently consists of two modules: Navigation and Configuration, and the 7 Steps and Setup Questions. These two modules must be completed before completing any subsequent training listed below. A third online budget training module will be available in the coming weeks.

RMS Practice Scenarios

(pre-requisite for in-person trainings)

Upon completion of the online training, your security will be set up in the RMS training environment and you will receive an email containing two practice exercises. Create these proposals prior to attending the in-person training because you will work directly in these proposals during class.

Reminder: Access the User Guide for help!

In-Person Training

There are three different in-person trainings available: two instructor-led courses and drop-in opportunities for one-on-one assistance. The current schedule is below and can also be found in the RMS section of the Research Education Calendar. The drop-in sessions and additional in-person training opportunities will be forthcoming.

Note: Sessions may not be held if there are fewer than 5 attendees.

  1. RMS 101: Budget and Routing (one 4 hour session)
    • Budget – Personnel (cost sharing, salary cap, adding personnel without effort)
    • Budget – Non-personnel (bulk entry, subprojets/subawards, F&A rates)
    • Routing – Building forms, Proposal Certification Forms (paper vs electronic), submitting to OSRS
  2. RMS 102: Advanced Submissions & Proposal Tracking (one 4 hour session)
    • Modular budgets, fellowship/training grants/K awards
    • Proposal tracking and award tracking
  3. Drop-In Sessions will be planned for later in April. Additional information will be sent in the coming weeks. These sessions are available, as needed, for one-on-one assistance with RMS questions.
